Artist Mentorship Without the Gatekeeping: Inside The Inner Studio
Most artist mentorship makes you apply first. The Inner Studio doesn’t. What good mentorship should do for you, what it costs, and what’s inside.

Most artist mentorship has a gate in front of it. An application form, a portfolio review, a waiting list, or a price you only hear on a sales call. By the time you’re through it, someone has already decided whether you’re serious enough.
I think that’s backwards. The artists who need an honest second pair of eyes most are often the ones those gates keep out: self taught painters, people coming back after years away, artists who are good but haven’t been picked yet.
So when I built The Inner Studio, I left the gate off. It’s an online art community and mentorship space for emerging artists, I run it myself, and anyone making work can join for £10 a month. Here’s what good artist mentorship should actually do for you, the different kinds on offer, what it costs, and exactly what you get inside.

Artist mentorship is simple at heart. Someone further along looks at your work and your decisions, tells you the truth, and helps you take the next step. Not a lecture. A conversation about your work.
Good mentorship should help you with four things:
- An honest read on your work, tied to what you were trying to do, not just whether someone likes it.
- The business decisions: what to charge, where to show, which open calls are worth the entry fee.
- The words around the work: your statement, your bio, and how you talk about what you make.
- A route to being seen: the road from studio to gallery, billboard, collector or open call, not just more advice.
If a mentor only does the first one, you get better work that nobody sees. If they only do the last one, you get visibility without the work to back it up. You need both, and you need it more than once.
What are the different kinds of artist mentorship?
There are four main routes, and they suit different moments. Here’s how they compare.

Feedback on your workCrits from me and the room, plus a live session every month
Best forSteady, honest feedback and a route to being seen
None of these is wrong. A one to one is brilliant before a big decision, and a course is great for learning one skill. But for most artists, most of the time, what moves the work forward is steady, honest feedback from someone who’s done it, and a room of artists working on the same things. That’s what I built The Inner Studio to be.
What is The Inner Studio?
The Inner Studio is Creative Flair’s online art community for emerging artists, and I run it myself. I’m James Carter, a figurative painter. I studied Fine Art and History of Art at Goldsmiths, started Creative Flair in 2019 and wrote VISIBLE, my field guide to getting your work seen.
It lives on its own site, theinnerstudio.net, built on Circle, so you can use it in your browser or in the free Circle app. I’m in there every week, reading work, answering questions and running the live sessions.
I built it because I couldn’t keep up with every message and every portfolio across every platform, and artists deserved better than a rushed reply. In the room I can be properly present: reading your work, answering your questions and running the sessions myself.
What’s inside The Inner Studio?
Think of it as a studio with rooms. Here’s the floor plan.
The Crit Room
Post a piece, finished or in progress. You get an honest read on it from me and the room, tied to what you were trying to do.
Where most members start
The Statement Clinic
Your artist statement and bio, made to sound like you, minus the art speak.
The live room
One session a month with me, on pricing, galleries, grants, social and group crits. Every one is recorded.
Replays whenever you need them
Ask the Room
Selling, pricing, social, websites, prints, galleries. Whatever you’ve been sitting on, any day.
From the Studio
A weekly note from me, just for members. The honest bits I wouldn’t say in public.
Open calls
A monthly roundup of the ones worth your time, and a checklist for the ones that only want your entry fee.
The library: The Creative Freedom Blueprint
My 99 lesson course on the business side of being an artist, to work through at your own pace.
Front door: £10 a month, no application
The Inner StudioFloor plan, not to scale
If you’d like a proper look round first, there’s a full tour on theinnerstudio.net, including how a crit works and what your first week could look like.
How does a crit work in The Inner Studio?
Post a piece in The Crit Room, finished or in progress, and say what you were going for. I’ll give you an honest read on it, tied to what you were trying to do, and the room joins in too. It’s the same eye people book my £225 one to ones for.
It’s not one way traffic, either. As Jess, an abstract artist in the room, put it: “Most people don’t just post to receive feedback, but genuinely return the favour as well.”
What happens in the monthly live sessions?
Once a month I run a live session for members. Pricing one month, galleries the next, then grants, social and group crits. One ran for two and a half hours because I stayed until the questions ran out. Every session is recorded, so if you can’t make it, you can watch the replay.
Who is The Inner Studio for?
Emerging artists at any stage. Self taught, mid career, coming back after years away, all welcome. Painters, printmakers, photographers, sculptors. There’s no application and no portfolio review, and members join from all over the world.
It’s probably not for you if:
- You want content to scroll and never use. It’s a room you show up to, not a library you lurk in.
- You’re not ready to put your own work in front of people yet. That’s fine. Come back when you are.
- You’re after a follower hack or a shortcut. I don’t sell those, because they don’t exist.
What else comes with it?
The Inner Studio sits at the centre of everything Creative Flair does, so members get more of all of it:
- Money off every Public Canvas billboard campaign, where your work goes up on real billboards.
- Spotlights to the Creative Flair audience of 137k on Instagram and 248k across every platform, plus early access to open calls.
- 25% off VISIBLE.
- First access to Creative Flair Live tickets, at the early bird price.
- Bring your numbers from Fair Signal into the room, and we’ll talk them through before you pay for a booth.
What do members say?
I’ve been out of the art world for 20 years, so having a space where I can ask questions and get genuinely helpful, relevant feedback is invaluable… James’ insight here alone is worth its weight in gold.
Most people don’t just post to receive feedback, but genuinely return the favour as well.
This space has really given me the confidence to grow as an artist.
How much does artist mentorship cost?
Prices vary hugely. One to one mentoring is usually charged by the hour or by the package, and an hour with me is £225. Selective programmes vary widely, and some only tell you the price once you’ve applied. Courses are usually a one off fee for recorded lessons.
The Inner Studio is £10 a month, or £100 a year, which works out at two months free. A whole year costs less than half an hour with me one to one, and comes with twelve live sessions and the room whenever you need it.
Monthly
£10a month
Stay as long as it’s useful, and cancel whenever you like.
Yearly
£100a year
Twelve live sessions, and the room whenever you need it.
Two months free
No lock in. Trouble paying? Email [email protected] and I’ll sort it out.
There’s no lock in. You can cancel from your account in a couple of clicks, with no email to send and no call to sit through, and you keep access until the end of the period you’ve paid for. If you’re still weighing it up, I’ve written an honest answer to whether The Inner Studio is worth it, including who it suits and who it doesn’t.
How do you get the most out of your first month?
Here’s what I’d do in your first month, in this order.
- Post one piece in The Crit RoomFinished or in progress. Say what you were trying to do, and see what the room sees.
- Send your statement to The Statement ClinicEven if you hate it. Especially if you hate it.
- Come to the live session, or watch the replayBring a question, or listen to everyone else’s. Both count.
- Ask the question you’ve been sitting onPost it in Ask the Room. If that month isn’t worth £10 to you, cancel, and no hard feelings 🙂
Questions artists ask about The Inner Studio
Do I have to apply?
No. There’s no application and no portfolio review. If you’re making work, you can join today.
Is it one to one mentoring?
Not quite. You get my eyes on your work in The Crit Room and a live session with me every month, inside a community of artists. If you want a private hour, one to one sessions with me are £225.
Do I need to be in the UK?
No. Members join from all over the world. The only thing tied to a place is the billboards themselves.
Is The Inner Studio part of Creative Flair?
Yes. It’s Creative Flair’s paid community, and I run it myself. It lives on theinnerstudio.net, built on Circle, and your login there is separate from any Creative Flair account.
How is it different from the free articles?
The articles and Fair Signal are free for everyone. The Inner Studio is smaller and paid, and it’s where I look at your actual work, answer your actual questions and run a live session every month.
Can I cancel?
Any time. Cancel from your account in a couple of clicks, and you keep access until the end of the period you’ve paid for.
The door’s open 🙂
No application, no lock in, and a painter who’ll actually look at your work. Come in for a month and see.
£10 a month, or £100 a year. Cancel any time.
