Love Art, Love Life. Talking Art with Paul Woods

“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” – Albert Einstein

Do you love looking at paintings? Would you like to understand/appreciate the art you see and love? Would you like to be able to articulate your thoughts and enjoy talking to friends and others about your reactions and feelings? You can, and I can help you. I will guide you in a way that is easy to follow and understand. Learning about art is pleasurable and fun.

I have creative energy and a passion for art. I can help you gain a greater pleasure and deeper understanding of the paintings you see and love that is pleasurable and fun. Engaging with art and looking at paintings is a joyful pleasure with many benefits –

• It brings joy and happiness, relieves stress, and dispels worries. • It makes you relaxed, calm, and content, increasing your well-being for a happier, healthier life. • Clears your mind creating a meditative state focusing thought. • It encourages creative and critical thinking skills. • Builds self-worth and confidence, develops positive attitudes and an open mind increasing empathy and tolerance. • Increases vocabulary and the confidence to articulate thoughts and express feelings, bringing the reward of achievement. • You don’t have to be artistic or have the talent to take part, • People of all ages can benefit from it.

The hardest thing to do is take that first step towards enriching your love and understanding of the world’s greatest paintings. It is common for people to lack the confidence to talk about art. Like most things in life, knowledge is not pre-installed but a process of learning and having people teach and encourage the building of knowledge and understanding that is achievable and pleasurable.

I can take you from personal opinion to informed knowledge and understanding. Opinions are valid to hold or express, but they are not an end but a beginning. It is a base from which to develop and expand. It is necessary to be open-minded and be prepared to alter opinions when presented with differing information or facts. With each step, your understanding, knowledge and confidence will grow. Your love of art will develop to bring much pleasure and satisfaction.

WHO AM I? I am a professional artist with a passion for art, graduating from St. Martin’s School of Art, London (1976-1979). I have a wealth of knowledge and years of experience as a painter, art tutor, and creative event organiser. I was born in the UK but now live in Portugal after several years of living in France. In my early years, I set up the Coventry Gallery, London, an exhibition and creative events space supporting young, up-and-coming artists and artists on the fringes of society. I ran a successful life drawing group for many years that earned me press coverage with local, national, and international magazines and numerous invitations to appear on television. The gallery, situated in the lively creative area of Shoreditch in East London, was alive with artists and galleries, including the Nicolas Treadwell Gallery whom I had the pleasure to know. Many of the YBA (Young British Artists) lived or socialised in the area. During my time at the gallery, I organised many successful exhibitions, art festivals, and creative events, including an Arts Council-supported art festival, Art Bites – Southlands Art Centre, London. Another turning point was the creation of a website co-founded with Photographer Christopher John Ball. The Association was a campaigning group for the rights and support of artists and models.

I have had exhibitions in London, Liverpool, Milton Keynes, Brussels, Denmark, France, and the United States. I have been on the judging panel for several art and photography competitions. I had a painting exhibited as a part of the prestigious B. P. Portrait Award, National Portrait Gallery, London UK, 1994.

You do not have to be artistic, and no special talent is required to participate. People of all ages can benefit from it.
