Depression is Somewhat of an Occupational Hazard

The strange thing about depression is that it can be both a force for destruction or creation weaving between the two. As an artist, I have experienced the highs and lows of both. On the creative side when one can channel the dark thoughts and twisted logic toward creating a painting it can be liberating, inhibitions disappear and necessary risk-taking can happen giving an artwork an edge and pushing one’s art in new directions with new ways of thinking but it is a terrible price to pay.

After years of depression, a suicide attempt that luckily failed, therapy followed quickly.

Depression is a serious problem, creating a mental and physical disability which greatly impedes the quality of life, and in extreme cases, self-harming or suicide. As an artist and long-term sufferer myself, I have creative energy and a passion for art. I want to use my experience and knowledge of Art Appreciation & Understanding to help others.

Clinical trials have shown that art appreciation based on looking at well-known paintings can significantly improve and reduced the prevalence of severe anxiety and depression.

There are many benefits to Art Appreciation as a form of art therapy:

  • It relieves stress and dispels worries.
  • Brings joy and happiness.
  • Makes you relax bringing calm and contentment.
  • Increases well-being and makes you happier and healthier.
  • It encourages creative thinking.
  • Increases brain plasticity and critical thinking
  • Improves cognitive powers
  • It builds self-worth and confidence
  • Develops positive attitudes and an open mind
  • Increases vocabulary and confidence to articulate thoughts and express feelings
  • Brings a feeling of achievement
  • It clears your mind creating a meditative state and focuses your thoughts
  • Increases empathy and tolerance

We all need to take advantage of simple pleasures to unwind and de-stress, to bring some relief, contentment, joy and happiness. In my sessions aimed at people coping with depression, I want to create a safe calm environment. The paintings selected will be for people to find peace and contentment, a pleasant distraction from the complexities of life.
