All About Interior (The Rape)
Since its creation, this painting, also known as The Rape, has baffled art historians.
Degas was known for historical paintings and works with a literary influence at the time it was painted, but there is no evidence of this in Interior.
By and large, it is agreed that the painting is based on a scene from Emile Zola’s 1867 novel Therese Raquin.
When it comes to Degas, this is one of his most dramatic and theatrical compositions, as the room’s objects are placed almost as props and the depiction of the characters has a stage-like, theatrical feel.
