Summary of The Village Bride
Jean-Baptiste Greuze, a French painter, debuted L’Accordée de Village at the 1761 Salon, where it was universally appreciated by the critics, especially Diderot. It was the pioneering work in the Greuze-favored genre of “moral painting.” It is now on display at the Louvre in Paris.
It was one of six paintings in a series. Former Greuze student Caroline de Valory worked with author Alexandre Louis Bertrand Robineau to create L’Accordée de Village, a one-act farce based on the paintings.
