About The Farewell of Telemachus and Eucharis

Jacques-Louis David painted The Farewell of Telemachus and Eucharis in 1818, and it now resides in the J. Paul Getty Museum. In his exile in Brussels, count Franz Erwein von Schonborn-Wiesentheid commissioned the painting. These are two characters from Fénelon’s novel Les Aventures de Télémaque, which was inspired by Homer’s Odyssey. It was the artist’s final depiction of a mythological couple; it served as a companion piece to Love and Psyche.
