Summary of The Ending of the War, Starting Home

War veteran Horace Pippin’s wartime memories are brought to life in his memoir The End of the War: Starting Home. After returning from World War I, the artist began working on this picture over fifteen years later.

Pippin, a member of one of just four African American regiments to see battle, had turned to painting as a means of coping with the loss of his right arm.

In his wartime memoirs, he said that these events “brought out all the art in me,” and this depiction of conflict, dread, and capitulation condenses those experiences.

Framed by weapons and helmets, Pippin’s representation of war’s human dimension is further enhanced.
