Artwork by Nicolas Poussin
Year Created 1660 – 1664
Summary of Spring (The Earthly Paradise)
Duc de Richelieu, the son of Cardinal Richelieu, commissioned Poussin to paint a set of four oil canvases depicting the four seasons between 1660 and 1664.
All About Spring (The Earthly Paradise)
They were painted in the final years of Poussin’s life, when he suffered from hand tremors that made painting difficult and painful, leading to Poussin’s total seclusion.
Nature’s grandeur and majesty are depicted in the paintings as a philosophical interpretation of the surrounding environment.
Additionally, they revolve around the four periods of day: early morning, lunch, evening and nighttime. The Louvre Museum in Paris currently houses all four paintings (Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter), each in its own chamber.
