All About Madonna at the Fountain

The painting, which measures 19 x 12 cm, is smaller than a postcard. Set in a conclusive garden, the fountain symbolises the source of all life. The Madonna is depicted in blue with two angels supporting her on either side of a richly embroidered cloth of honour. Using the rose bush as a backdrop, the Christ Child holds prayer beads in his left hand, which evokes the rosary. The rosary became increasingly popular in northern Europe in the mid-to-late 15th century.
