Summary of La Rue du Soleil, Port Vendres
After relocating to France in 1923, Mackintosh spent the rest of his life painting watercolours until his death in 1928.
This watercolour of the village’s reflection in the harbour is one of the series’ finest examples of the series’ preoccupation with pattern and colour.
Equal attention was paid to the foreground and background, the shimmer of the running water, and the geometric shapes of the structures all contribute to an almost abstract impression of the composition as a whole.
