All About Je t’aime No.2
Between 1953 and 1957, when his second marriage came to an end, artist Robert Motherwell produced his second substantial body of work: the Je t’aime Nos. 2 and 3 series. Colorful, dynamic brushwork, and the artist’s hallmark ovoid and rectilinear forms are all evident in this piece.
An allusion to Gallic culture and, most doubt, to Motherwell’s personal fears are expressed in the phrase “Je t’aime,” (“I love you”), which is written across the painting.
