Summary of A Prison Scene
Prison Interior is an oil on canvas painting by the Spanish artist Francisco Goya, who lived from 1746 to 1828. It was done between 1793 and 1794. Dim, cold light makes the painting look like it’s in hell.
All About A Prison Scene
It is one of a few works of art he made of scenes in lunatic asylums, like Yard with Lunatics (1793–1794) and The Madhouse (1812-1813). When these paintings were made, mad-houses were places where people with mental illnesses could be sent without even trying to figure out what was wrong with them or how to treat them. Goya was afraid that he might not be sane, which makes these works feel gloomy.
