All About Queen Victoria
A four-sitting oil study of Buckingham Palace was completed by Sully on March 22, 1838.
When the artist saw Victoria that day, he noted in his journal, “of good form, particularly the neck and bosom,” that she was “of beautiful form.”
While he was forbidden by decorum to draw attention to her décolletage, he was free to show off the lovely curves of her back.
Victoria’s sensuality was Sully’s biggest freedom in presenting her as a beautiful young woman.
Her neck and shoulders were painted in the luscious, impressionistic style that distinguishes his best work in the oil study.
