All About Ildefonso Altar
Central panel: It shows Saint Ildefonsus having a vision of the Virgin Mary, in which she gave him a casula. It’s named after that. People who were regents of the Spanish Netherlands show up on the side panels with their patron saints Albert and Elisabeth of Hungary.
In the church of Saint Jacques-sur-Coudenberg in Brussels, Albert started the Ildefonso Brotherhood in order to encourage people to be loyal to the Habsburg dynasty. His widow had the altarpiece made for the Brotherhood soon after his death.
