All About Vanish

As a member of the Cobra art movement, Pierre Alechinsky was an important figure in the movement’s emphasis on material and spontaneous application.

Vanish (Dis, 1959), Alechinsky’s most famous work, depicts a female figure who appears and then vanishes in the centre of the canvas. White pigment has been thickly impasted on the surface, while blue lines have been primarily used in the background to create a textured surface.

The artist’s signature allover patterning, seen in earlier works like The Ant Hill (La fourmilière, 1954), is still visible. The fluidity and vitality of his work, which he observed in Japan during his 1955 travels, points to the artist’s fascination with Japanese calligraphy.
