All About The Dance

In the 1980s, Rego painted images of her childhood in Portugal. As much as this scene could evoke memories of past folk festivals, there is a deeper symbolic meaning hidden beneath the surface. Life’s journey is depicted in this dance that begins in childhood and progresses through old age. As the figures move in unison, they suggest a delicate balance between constant change and the essential continuity of life. She has a haunting, dream-like quality to her work, which often refers to childhood anxieties and fantasies. Victor Willing, Rego’s husband and fellow artist, died while the work was in progress.
