One of the most famous and well-known artworks from the Paleolithic era is a wall of hand outlines. These walls and hand outlines can be found in a variety of places, and are not uncommon.
Many presume that these are handprints, but in fact, they are highly accurate outlines.
They achieved these outlines by chewing up charcoal and dirt, mixing it in with their saliva, and then spitting it over their hand in an aggressive manner, it would then leave an outline.
There are many different theories as to why they did this, but the most commonly accepted one is that it is a gathering of all the tribespeople to commemorate them all. It is thought of as a tradition for each place that they went to.
The other theory is that this is just kids who are messing around, (the earliest form of graffiti).
The true fact of the matter is that we just don’t know why they did this, there is such a lack of information that is available to us about this period of time to be certain of anything as to the meanings behind such actions.
